Las Leonas Information
Las Leonas (The Lionesses) have competed in six Hockey World Cup finals, including the inaugural in 1974, in which they lost 1-0 to the Netherlands. After a 1–1 tie, Argentina had to settle for second place in two more finals until triumphing for the first time in 2002 by defeating the Netherlands 4–3 in the final on penalty strokes.
Leading eight-time FIH Player of the Year Luciana Aymar won one more in 2010, 3–1 against the Netherlands. Sergio Vigil in 2002 and Carlos Retegui in 2010 are the Argentina World Cup coaches. From a continental level, Argentina has dominated and won every tournament they participated in, including the Pan American Cup and the Pan American Games.
This left the U.S. in second place in most tournaments until it lost the Pan American Games final for the first time in 2011. Following the introduction of an official World Ranking System, Argentina topped the FIH Women's World Ranking for the first time in July 2003; it attained it once again in 2010 following the acquisition of the World Cup title and once more in late 2013.
