La Sylphide Information
Featuring choreography by innovative Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni and music by Jean-Madeleine Schneitzhoeffer, La Sylphide had its debut performance on 12 March 1832 at the Salle Le Peletier of the Paris Opéra.
The artist, Taglioni, created the piece to honor his daughter, Marie. In contrast to the technique taken by dancers in the late 1820s, which sometimes involved ungraceful arm movements and exertions, La Sylphide was the first ballet in which dancing en pointe had an aesthetic purpose. Marie's infamous skirt-shortening issue occurred during a performance of La Sylphide (she did so to showcase her impressive pointe skills).
Meyerbeer's opera Robert Le Diable featured Marie Taglioni in its dance part, Ballet of the Nuns; tenor Adolphe Nourrit, the first "Robert," penned the libretto for the ballet. The narrative Nourrit adapted for the ballet Trilby, ou Le Lutin d'Argail, was originally written about a goblin and a fisherman's wife. Still, in Nourrit's version, the protagonists are a fairy and a farmer.
The opening scene of Act II, featuring Old Madge's witchcraft, was inspired by a scene of witches from Il Noce di Benevento (The Walnut Tree of Benevento), a ballet created in 1812 by Salvatore Vigan and Franz Xaver Süssmayr.
