As a senior mechanical engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, Kobie Boykins is a key figure in the space agency's technological advancements. He was presented the NASA's Exceptional Achievement Medal in 2013. He was responsible for designing the actuators on the Mars rover Curiosity and the solar array systems on Spirit and Opportunity, both of which were sent to the red planet for scientific research. For now, he is in charge of Curiosity's mobility and remote sensing teams.
He was a member of NASA's M-Team in 2003, which gave presentations to schoolchildren all around the country about opportunities in STEM fields. The National Geographic Society sends him across the world to give talks about Mars exploration.
