Jenufa Information
Jeji pastorkyna, which is commonly known as Jenufa, is an opera that consists of three acts by Leos Janacek to a Czech libretto and is based on the play of the same name, Jeji pastorkyna, by the composer Gabriela Preissova. The opera was first performed on January 21, 1904, at the National Theatre, Brno. Jenufa is among the first operas written in prose and the first of Janacek’s opera in which his voice can be heard very clearly.
Jenufa is a grim story of infanticide and redemption. The early popularity of the opera was primarily due to a revised version by Karel Kovarovic. The opera was well-received first in Prague and worldwide after its premiere in Vienna.
The plot of the Jenufe revolves around a set of village relationships. The opera was recorded for the first time in 1951 and took place at the Dvorak Hall of the Rudolfinum conducted by Jaroslav Vogel. In 1969, it was recorded for the second time at Zofin Hall, Prague. Other recordings of the Jenufe have taken place in 1974, 1977, 1980, 1983, 2003, and 2014.
