Jean François Mercier (July 19, 1967) is a Canadian television host, screenwriter, and comedian from Montreal, Quebec. Mercier’s act is mixing social criticism with vulgarity, expressions of anger, and curse words. He nicknamed himself Le Gros Cave and gained major recognition through TV show appearances in the early 2000s while appearing on The Mike Ward Show. He played “The Frustrated Guy,” a recurring character in the show.
Mercier started his one-person show that has appeared several times at Montreal’s French comedy festival, Just For Laughs. He also worked as one of the screenwriters of a popular television show “Les Bougon.” Mercier has been hosting his late-night talk show “Un gars le soir” since 2010. He appeared in the short-lived tabloid talk show in the late 1990s named “Black Out.” He also appeared as an audience member who was always trying to spark controversy.
Mercier was an independent candidate during the Canadian federal election in 2011. His notable electoral promises included adding a second Mercier bridge because he and the bridge had the same surname.
