I Need That Information
A drama about a man's obsessive hoarding after his wife dies, I Need That is staged by Moritz von Stuelpnagel and written by Theresa Rebeck. However, the three-hander lumbers around like an awkwardly scripted comedy, clinging to its subjects rather than tackling the absence of subtlety or emotional depth it displays.
Danny DeVito plays the role of Sam, a depressed loner who lives in filth. Aside from Sam's daughter Amelia (Lucy DeVito) and his amigo Foster (Ray Anthony Thomas), no one else is invited. Their reactions to Sam's hoarding and his refusal to acknowledge he has a problem range from shock and concern to growing frustration.
If Sam doesn't get his act together, he will soon face criticism and lose his apartment, which is the central conflict of the drama. On the other hand, Alexander Dodge's set design falls short. Instead of the devastation of a real hoarder's hub, it provides the impression of a disorderly antique shop, complete with stacks of suitcases and books.
After making his Broadway debut in Arthur Miller's The Price six years ago, DeVito returns triumphantly with I Need That. Using Rebeck's comic material to his advantage, DeVito delivers a hilarious performance. He adds charisma and, at times, devastating effects to Sam's problems in the ensemble and on his own. As an impressive demonstration of his abilities, a scene in which he plays Sorry! alone is both captivating and humorous.
