The most beloved annual Christmas ritual is George Frideric Handel's Messiah, although it was not composed specifically for Christmas. It first premiered in Dublin in 1742 as an Easter performance. Not everyone loved it; some thought it was blasphemous, which was par for the course for classical composers of the period.
Despite numerous claims to the contrary, Handel reportedly only needed twenty-four hours to compose the oratorio in its initial form, which was whipped up in a matter of weeks.
