Fellow Travelers Information
Fellow Travelers is an American opera in 16 scenes composed by Gregory Spears to a libretto by Greg Pierce. The opera is based upon the 2007 novel of Thomas Mallon entitled, Fellow Travelers. It is a co-commission by G. Sterling Zinsmeyer and Cincinnati Opera. Opera Fusion originally developed the Fellow Travelers: New Works, a collaboration between the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Cincinnati Opera. Its major focus is to create a new form of American operas.
Fellow Travelers was premiered at Cincinnati Opera in June 2016. It was presented by the Lyric Opera of Chicago in March 2018, the Boston Lyric Opera in November 2019, and the Minnesota Opera in June 2018. The opera is all set during the 1950s McCarthy era. It primarily focuses on the “lavender scare.” The story of the Fellow Travelers center on the love affair between two men working for the federal government.
The premiere cast of the Fellow Travelers includes Aaron Blake (as Timothy Laughlin), Joseph Lattanzi (Hawkins Fuller), Davon Guthrie (Mary Johnson), and Vernon Hartman (Senator Charles E. Potter/General Airlie/Bartender), to name a few.
