Die Fledermaus Information
Die Fledermaus, The Flittermouse or The Bat, often known as The Revenge of the Bat, is an operetta. Johann Strauss II composed this to a German libretto by Richard Genée and Karl Haffner. Das Gefängnis (The Prison) was the original literary source for Die Fledermaus and is a farce by German playwright Julius Roderich Benedix. Die Fledermaus premiered on April 5, 1874, at the Theater an der Wien which is located in Vienna. The operetta was performed in New York under Rudolf Bial at the Stadt Theatre (November 21, 1874) though the German premiere of the operetta took place at Munich's Gärtnerplatztheater in 1875.
Die Fledermaus came to Paris in 1877 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, by the name La Tzigane. The roles assigned to the cast were Gabriel von Eisenstein to Jani Szika, Rosalinde, Eisenstein's wife to Marie Geistinger, Adele, Rosalinde's maid to Caroline Charles-Hirsch, Ida, Adele's sister to Jules, Alfred, a singer-teacher to Hans Rüdiger, Dr Falke, a notary to Ferdinand Lebrecht, Dr Blind, a lawyer to Carl Matthias Rott, Frank, a prison governor to Carl Adolf Friese, Prince Orlofsky, a Russian prince to Irma Nittinger, and Frosch, a jailer to Alfred Schreiber.
Die Fledermaus has been successfully adapted many times for the cinema and TV. Some include Das fidele Gefängnis (The Merry Jail), a silent film in Germany 1917, Die Fledermaus (silent film) 1923, Die Fledermaus, La Chauve-Souris in France/Germany 1931, Die Fledermaus – TV adaptation in Austria 1972, and many more.
