David Seth Kotkin (September 16, 1956), better known as David Copperfield, is an American magician who Forbes describes as the most financially successful magician of all time. He started going under the moniker "Davino the Boy Magician" at 10, and he was accepted to the Society of American Magicians at twelve. The youngest member of the Society ever inducted was Copperfield. By sixteen, he was teaching a magic course at the esteemed New York University.
Copperfield's life after that seems like a laundry list of achievements. He starred in and developed the illusions for the Chicago musical "The Magic Man" at age eighteen. Inspired by the Charles Dickens book, Kotkin formally adopted the surname Copperfield during this period. At nineteen, he put on his own "The Magic of David Copperfield" performance in a Honolulu, Hawaii hotel.
Among the artistic icons he has worked with are Jim Carrey, Jennifer Lopez, Ray Bradbury, and Francis Ford Coppola. Notable illusions include flying on stage and traversing the Great Wall of China, the disappearance of a Learjet, and the vanishing and reappearance of the Statue of Liberty; Copperfield has won 21 times and was nominated for 38 Emmy Awards over the years.
