Das Rheingold Information
The first of Richard Wagner's four operas that make up his epic music drama cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen is titled Das Rheingold. The opera's first performance occurred on September 22, 1869, at the National Theatre in Munich as a standalone work; the first performance of the Ring cycle was on August 13, 1876, at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus.
Wagner composed the music for the Ring cycles in reverse order from when the librettos were completed, making Das Rheingold the final text written but the first to be set to music. Wagner worked on this music until 1874 but only gave the go-ahead for a full performance once the score was finished in 1854.
Wagner's patron, King Ludwig II of Bavaria, forced him to stage the 1869 Munich premiere of Das Rheingold against his desires. Following its 1876 Bayreuth premiere, the Ring cycle was performed in all the major opera houses worldwide, where it has remained a staple due to its enduring popularity.
From 1937 on, live performances of Das Rheingold were recorded at Bayreuth and elsewhere, but these recordings were released briefly. Georg Solti's 1958 Decca recording of the opera, part of his entire Ring cycle (recorded between 1958 and 1966), inaugurated a new era in opera recordings.
