Dallas Opera Information
The Dallas Opera, based in that city, gives American operatic performances. The Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House is part of the AT&T Performing Arts Center, where the company regularly performs. In 1957, Lawrence Kelly and Nicolà Rescigno, who had previously worked at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as administrator and artistic director, respectively, formed what is now known as the Dallas Civic Opera.
Maria Callas gave the opening night performance in Music Hall at Fair Park, led by Rescigno. Montserrat Caballé, Plácido Domingo, Gwyneth Jones, Waltraud Meier, Magda Olivero, Joan Sutherland, and Jon Vickers are just a few vocalists who made their American debuts in Dallas. Director and designer Franco Zeffirelli also made his American debut at that time.
1985, the company received its first commission for Robert Xavier Rodriguez's Monkey See, Monkey Do, a one-act children's opera. The Aspern Papers (opera) by Dominick Argento was commissioned by the Dallas Opera and premiered there in 1988; the performance was televised on PBS's "Great Performances" series. Tobias Picker's Thérèse Raquin (2000) and Jake Heggie's Moby-Dick (2010) were also commissioned works.
