Sarasota County has traditionally been associated with the circus and the art of clowning. In 1967, the world was introduced to a new generation of performers when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus established a clown academy in the popular Florida beach town. John Ringling, an entrepreneur from the Midwest, relocated the winter quarters of his Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus from Connecticut to the rapidly developing city of Sarasota in Florida in 1927, beginning a partnership that lasted almost a century.
The typical American clown was 70 years old by the middle of the 1960s. Circus magnates started to worry that the art form might die out if there wasn't a new generation of clowns to carry the torch. A single entrepreneurial visionary would provide the solution. The tightrope walkers, clowns, trapeze artists, and lion trainers all made their way to Ringling's winter accommodations. Wandering painters with unique styles would come to Sarasota during the off-season to perfect their craft in the mild environment.
The Circus Arts Conservatory in Sarasota hosts an annual Circus Summer Camp, which carries on the legacy of Clown College. Campers (ages five to fifteen) learn clowning and circus arts abilities, including "rolla bolla," juggling, and unicycling, during one- or two-week courses from early June to early August. Many lessons are available to adults, but something other than a professional clown's slapstick antics can bring out a child's imagination.
