Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a play in three acts. In the years between 1953 and 1955, he penned the play based on his short tale "Three Players of a Summer Game" from 1952. The play was Williams's favorite of his works and went on to win the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Big Daddy Pollitt is a wealthy cotton tycoon, and the play takes place in his "plantation home in the Mississippi Delta," focusing on the dynamics between Big Daddy, his son Brick, and Brick's wife, Maggie the "Cat."
The themes of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof include materialism, hypocrisy, shallowness, degeneration, sexual suppression, and death. Dialogue is consistently written using nonstandard spelling to convey Southern American accents. Among the original cast were Ben Gazzara, Burl Ives, and Barbara Bel Geddes. In 1958, the play was filmed under the same title, with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman in the lead roles of Maggie and Brick, respectively, and Burl Ives and Madeleine Sherwood reprising their roles from the play. Williams significantly cut and reworked the piece for a 1974 revival. Many revivals have occurred since, and this version has been adopted each time.
