Bassem Youssef Information
Bassem Raafat Mohamed Youssef (March 21, 1974) is an Egyptian surgeon, television host, and comedian. He was born in Cairo, Egypt. Inspired by the 2011 Egyptian revolution, Youssef debuted his satirical show in March 2011. The idea came from his friend Tarek El Kazzaz. His 5-minute program, The B+ Show (named after his blood type), became viral on YouTube in May 2011 and garnered over five million views in just three months.
In January, Youssef was appointed as a resident fellow for the 2015-2016 spring semester at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government's Institute of Politics (IOP). "Tickling Giants," a documentary on Youssef's experience, was co-produced by Sara Taksler, producer of "The Daily Show," and was scheduled to arrive on Kickstarter in February 2015. Youssef was the master of ceremonies in New York's Radio City Music Hall for the 2015 International Emmy Awards, which took place in November.
During the autumn of 2016, Youssef was a visiting scholar at Stanford University's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL). In February 2016, Youssef and Bassem Youssef's digital series, Democracy Handbook, was officially greenlit for production after they reached a deal with Fusion. Midway through July 2016, the show premiered on both the internet and a one-hour special broadcast.
