Vaid-Menon is the son of Malayali and Punjabi immigrant parents from Malaysia and India, respectively, who settled in College Station, Texas, to pursue careers in academia and the healthcare industry. Alok experienced racism and transphobia as a child. Since they did not realize they were different until they were penalized for it and told who they were, they felt they could not come out on their terms as a gender non-conforming.
