Penn Relays Information
The Penn Relays, sometimes called the Penn Relays Carnival, is the oldest and biggest track and field event in the U.S. They have been held yearly at Philadelphia's Franklin Field by the University of Pennsylvania since April 21, 1895. The 2012 meet featured 116 events.
Held at Franklin Field on April 21, 1895, the inaugural Penn Relay Carnival was a smashing success. The gathering drew about 5,000 individuals. There were nine relay races, with two teams competing in each. Of these, four were for high school and prep school. Four of the remaining five were collegiate races, and one was a championship event.
The Penn Relays feature the most competitors among all track and field meets held annually. Over five days, over 300 events are held, drawing over 15,000 athletes from high schools, universities, and track clubs around North America and beyond, including Jamaica.
Many people believe that the event was instrumental in making relay races more commonplace. It concludes on the final Saturday of April after the last full week of the month. On Saturday alone, attendance surpassed 50,000; throughout the last three days, it usually exceeds 100,000. Additionally, the Penn Relays host an evening for the Catholic Youth Organization for Catholic Middle Schools in the Philadelphia Archdiocese. The preliminary rounds are held on Tuesday of Carnival Week and on Friday, the finals.
