Iowa Wolves Information
Des Moines, Iowa, is home to the Iowa Wolves, an NBA G League club linked with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team was founded in the United States. The Wells Fargo Arena is home to the Wolves, the NBA G League's Western Conference members. The Iowa Energy played in the NBA Development League (D-League) from 2007–2017 before the Timberwolves bought the franchise and changed the name. With 8,842 spectators, they set a new record for the D-league on their inaugural home game.
The Energy and the Memphis Grizzlies announced their partnership after the 2014 season, which would be a hybrid single affiliation arrangement. A change to Grizzlies colors was made to the team's color scheme. The new affiliation contract was spearheaded by Jed Kaplan, a minority owner of the Memphis Grizzlies who was also chosen managing partner for the Energy ownership group. When the 2016–17 season ended and the Memphis Hustle, the Grizzlies' D-League affiliate, took over operations, the arrangement ended.
The deal was consummated on May 3, 2017, after the Minnesota Timberwolves announced on January 23, 2017, that they would acquire the Energy to become their D-League affiliate starting with the 2017–18 season. The squad changed its name to the Iowa Wolves on May 30. Aside from the Twin Cities and Des Moines-based Timberwolves and Wolves' association, there is also a shared affiliation between the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild and the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild.
