The Grey Cup, whose French translation is "cup grey," is the title game and trophy of the Canadian Football League (CFL), Canada's premier professional football league. One of the biggest yearly athletic events on Canadian television, the game pits the champions of the Canadian Football League's East and West Divisional playoffs against each other.
Regularly garnering over 4 million Canadian viewers, the Grey Cup game is Canada's biggest yearly sporting and television event. Playing in the game earns you two trophies: MVP and the Dick Suderman Trophy for best Canadian player.
The University of Toronto's Toronto Varsity Blues were the inaugural Grey Cup champions. The First World War halted play from 1916–1918, and a rules disagreement stopped it in 1919. Since the 1920s, the game has usually been played with the East and West teams facing off.
As a result of the postponement of the regular season in May 2020, the 108th Grey Cup festivities in Regina, Saskatchewan, which were supposed to be the inaugural event at the new Mosaic Stadium, were announced to be canceled and rescheduled for 2022. Instead of using a neutral site, the site for the game would be determined by the regular season records.
In August, the Grey Cup and the 2020 Canadian Football League season were canceled, marking the first year since 1919 that has yet to be played.
