Based in the nation's capital, the DC Defenders play professional American football. The NFL team known as the Defenders play in the league. The organization was established by Alpha Entertainment, which Vince McMahon heads. Dwayne Johnson's Alpha Acquico and Fox Corporation are the current owners and operators of the squad. Audi Field is where the Defenders host their home games. With a 12-3 record (.800 win %) as of the 2024 season, the Defenders are the second-best UFL team.
The Defenders signed former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Cardale Jones on October 15, 2019, marking the first player in franchise history. The 2020 XFL Draft was held later that same day. With the first overall pick, the Defenders drafted wide receiver Rashard Davis; however, Davis never played for the team and eventually signed with the Tennessee Titans.
The Defenders defeated the Seattle Dragons 31-19 on February 8, 2020, to become the first team in contemporary XFL history to win a game. The first shutout in current XFL history was achieved on February 15, 2020, when the Defenders defeated the New York Guardians by a score of 27-0. The XFL announced the cancellation of the remaining games of the 2020 XFL season on March 12, 2020. The XFL and the USFL were reportedly in advanced talks to combine leagues before the 2024 seasons began (Axios, September 2023).
