Championship Tractor Pull Information
In its initial year, the Championship Tractor Pull was so popular that 15 drivers signed up in the inaugural pull before it was even officially created. The CTP is still a companion event to the considerably larger NFMS, but it has evolved into a top event in its own right. Each year, a select set of pullers make history by being part of an elite group of drivers that win the national championship. The nation's oldest indoor tractor pull has a rich history to share with its ardent supporters, with over 75,000 fans packing Freedom Hall for five heart-pounding performances over four days. The CTP's tractor pulling organization, WBHM (a term derived from the initials of the founding members), was founded in 1969.
From 1969 to 1986, popular WAVE radio and TV personality Jack Crowner was the CTP's voice. Butch Krieger and Lloyd Douglas, competitors in the first CTP, eventually joined Crowner as announcers. In the first Championship Tractor Pull, 66 tractors raced in three divisions (5,000, 10,000, and 15,000-pound tractors).
The pull was extended from one to two days in 1970, and the classes were rearranged to include tractors weighing 5,000, 9,000, 12,000, and 15,000 pounds. More than 23,000 people attended the two-night event. The CTP prize money grew from $5,700 to $20,000 for the 1973 pull in only five years. In 1977, the first truck class (6,000 lb. 4WD trucks) was introduced. This feature contributed to the pull selling out for the first time in CTP history, with over 64,000 fans attending the four-day event.
