AAU Junior Games Information
State track and field competitions were the 'telegraphic' ancestors of the AAU Junior Olympic Games. In place of traditional face-to-face competition, national champions were selected via phone and mail-in ballots. It was in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1949 that the AAU held its first "live" national meet, officially launching the AAU Youth Sports Program. The AAU's top brass searched door-to-door for corporate sponsorship after the national track and field head-to-head competition proved popular.
The AAU's goal of helping many children was made possible with the aid of General Motors' Chevrolet division and the Quaker Oats Company. The AAU's leadership saw an opportunity to capitalize on the growing success of its Youth Sports Program by holding two national finals at once. On August 21, 1967, in the Departmental Auditorium on Constitution Avenue in downtown Washington, D.C., Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey hailed the opening of the first AAU Junior Olympic Games.
That year, five hundred twenty-three athletes competed in the inaugural AAU Junior Olympic Games. Swimming and track and field national champions were named. A total of 18 new swimming records and three new track & field marks were set by the Amateur Athletic Union. The AAU Junior Olympic Games have been held in 19 states and 30 cities around the United States since their inception in the nation's capital. Six AAU Junior Olympic Games have been held in Tennessee, making it the leader.
