By the time he was 22, rapper, singer, and musician Zero 9:36 had gone from being a cult character in the Philadelphia hip-hop scene to an alternative artist with a large fanbase across the country. When Zero released his mixtape Paradise Campground in 2016, his machine-gun delivery and scathing verses made him a talent to watch. On the 2019 EP, You Will Not Be Saved; he blended rapping and singing while changing his stage name to Zero 9:36 and giving guitars and electronics a stronger role in his arrangements.
On May 11, 1997, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, Matthew Cullen created Zero 9:36. When Matthew was ten years old, a relative who worked in music production wanted a child's voice for a vocal sample. Young Matthew won the job. He had never been in a studio before, and this was his first time. Cullen first heard rap music when he was 12 years old, claiming Tory Lanez, Blackbear, and D-Pryde as major influences. He took on the stage moniker Zero and started perfecting his rapping abilities, developing a quicksilver flow and a combative lyrical style that frequently resembled Eminem.
