Weedie Braimah Information
The djembe is a West African drum with a hollow wood body, and animal hide stretched and fixed over the top. Its roots originated in the 12th century, and Weedie Braimah is a djembefola or master of the djembe. Braimah came from a long line of musicians and was born in Ghana but reared in East St. Louis.
Oscar Sulley Braimah Sr. was a great drummer and composer whose Uhuru Dance Band recorded groundbreaking music that fused jazz and traditional African styles. Ann Morris, Braimah's mother, was a talented jazz drummer, and his great-uncle Idris Muhammad led his bands and performed with Grant Green, Horace Silver, Pharoah Sanders, and Roberta Flack.
On his new album, The Hands Of Time, Braimah explores the sonic connections between Africa and its diaspora. The sound of the djembe gives these contemporary genres a timeless pulse, and the album features a wide range of international partners on tracks including "Full Circle," "Express Train to Bamako," and "Send for Me."
