Tomson Highway Information
Tomson Highway (December 6, 1951) is an Indigenous Canadian children's author, novelist, and playwright. He was born in Manitoba, Canada. Before being committed to residential school, he was nurtured in the traditional Cree way and spoke only Cree at home. He is connected to Billy Merasty, the actor and dramatist. Tomson's father voluntarily enrolled him at Guy Hill Indian Residential School when he was six. Up until he turned fifteen, he could only visit during the summer.
The Rez Sisters, published by Highway in 1986, has been a critically acclaimed and award-winning play produced all around Canada. The Edinburgh International Festival hosted it in 1988 as well. Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, which he wrote and published in 1989, was the first Canadian drama fully staged in Toronto at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Both plays focus on the inhabitants of the made-up Wasychigan Hill First Nation reserve on Manitoulin Island.
Seven Rez ladies (and one man, Nanabush) plot a road trip to Toronto for the "BIGGEST BINGO IN THE WORLD" in The Rez Sisters. The ice hockey obsession of the male protagonists in Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing is shown, and a female trickster character is introduced. Rose, the third drama in the heptalogy, was written in 2000 and incorporates characters from all previous plays. In addition to leading the De-ba-jeh-mu-jig theatrical company in Wikwemikong, Highway oversaw Toronto's Native Earth Performing Arts from 1986 to 1992.
