TAIKOPROJECT Information
TAIKOPROJECT is an American Taiko band that originated from Los Angeles. Bryan Yamami is the executive director, and Masato Baba is the artistic director of the group. The other band members who perform are Jen Baik, Andrew Chen, Courtney Deguchi, Darren Endo, Keiko Harada, Liz Ishida, Jenny Mimura, Blaine O'Brien, Yumi Saito, Doug Sakamoto, Audrey Tu, and Brian Yamagata. The apprentices are Kaz Mogi and Risa Isogawa, whereas the trainees are Bevin Chan and Gaku Sasaki. In 2000, TAIKOPROJECT was founded by a group of young, emerging taiko drummers who were searching to create an American style of taiko. The young members blended traditional forms in which they were raised with the taiko. The members also added a fresh aesthetics and an innovative approach to the Japanese drum.
The group has recorded and performed with some of the world's best-known musical artists such as Usher, 30 Seconds to Mars, Alicia Keys, A.R. Rahman, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, producer Squeak E. Clean, Sean Paul, Justin Bieber, Xzibit, Kanye West, and DJ Tiesto. The group is stated to be the first one that won the prestigious Tokyo International Taiko Contest in 2005. In the same year, the band was cast in the Mitsubishi Eclipse commercial, which was the first and only national ad campaign to prominently featured taiko.
TAIKOPROJECT has delivered performances in some of America's highest-profile events, such as the Grammy Awards and Academy Awards. The band has also been on three KTLA News features, VH1's Do Something Awards, the iHeartRadio Music Festival, The X-Factor, Conan, and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Some of the significant honors earned by TAIKOPROJECT are 1st place in the 2012 East-West Players Anniversary Gala and the 2005 Tokyo International Taiko Contest, Visionary Award.
