Swingtime is an American big band that is based in Cleveland, Ohio. The group is known for featuring five reeds: alto, baritone saxes, flute, tenor, and clarinet, along with four trumpets, a rhythm section, four trombones, and a male vocalist. The band features the pure sounds of the ’30s to ’50s with classic arrangements from some well-known bands such as Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, and Buddy Rich. Swingtime Big Band also plays the newer sounds of contemporary artists, including Harry Connick, Brian Setzer, Michael Buble, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
The sound of the Swingtime Big Band is defined as smooth jazz, big band, swing classics, ballads, waltzes, and Broadway. The band’s vocalist is Curtis Avant, who featured the timeless songs of Frank Sinatra, Louis Jordan, Dean Martin, and Joe Williams. He is also known for adding B.B. King, Barry Manilow, The Temptations, Four Tops, and Tom Jones. The Musical Director for Swingtime is lead alto Ken Paynter, assisted by a drummer and arranger named Ernie Molner.
