Steel Pulse Information
Steel Pulse is an English reggae band based in the Handsworth area of Birmingham, England. The current lineup of the group consists of Baruch Hinds (rap and backing vocals), Zem Audu (Saxophone), Stephen Bradley (trumpet), David Ellecirri Jr. (lead guitar), Amlak Tafari (bass), Wayne C# Clarke (drums), Sidney Mills (keyboards and backing vocals), Selwyn Brown (keyboards and backing vocals), and David Hinds (lead vocals and rhythm guitar).
Steel Pulse released its debut album in 1978 entitled Handsworth Revolution. The album was part of the evolution of roots reggae outside Jamaica. Despite moderate critical and economic success through three albums, the band’s relationship with Island Records had deteriorated when their third album, Caught You, was released (released in the United States as Reggae Fever). In 1980, the band made its first appearance in the United States at the Mudd Club in New York.
Steel Pulse switched to Elektra Records in 1982 and released True Democracy, their most consistent collection of songs since Handsworth Revolution, which was highlighted by the Garvey-eulogizing’ Rally Round’ cut. In 1984, Earth Crisis released a new definitive collection. Their next stop was MCA, where they recorded State of Emergency (1988), which had some of the synthesized dance elements from the previous album.
Steel Pulse’s studio albums include Caught You (1980), True Democracy (1982), Earth Crisis (1984), Babylon the Bandit (1986), Grammy Award Winner – Best Reggae Album, State of Emergency (1988), Victims (1991), Vex (1994), Rage and Fury (1997), African Holocaust (2004), and Mass Manipulation (2019).
