St Paddys Celebration Information
On 17 March, the traditional date of Saint Patrick's death, a religious and cultural celebration known as Saint Patrick's Day or the Feast of Saint Patrick is observed. The Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Lutheran Church, and the Anglican Communion all mark Saint Patrick's Day as an official Christian feast day established in the early 17th century, including the Church of Ireland in particular.
The Saint Patrick's Day festivities we know today owe a significant part of their traditions to the Irish émigré community, particularly in the Americas. It's interesting to note that Saint Patrick's Day was more widely celebrated among the diaspora than in Ireland until the latter part of the twentieth century. A notable tradition is the Taoiseach's gift of a bowl of Waterford crystal adorned with shamrocks to the US president. This tradition began in 1952 when John Hearne, the Irish ambassador to the US, handed a box of shamrocks to President Harry S. Truman.
On certain occasions, the Irish Taoiseach or President would personally present the US president with shamrocks on Saint Patrick's Day; from then on, it became customary for the Irish embassy to deliver shamrocks to an official in the US president's administration every year. The annual tradition of gifting shamrocks began when Taoiseach Albert Reynolds met with President Bill Clinton in 1994.
