Shawn Colvin Information
Shawn Colvin (January 10, 1956) was born as Shawna Lee Colvin. She is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Vermillion, South Dakota. Colvin spent her young age in Carbondale, Illinois, and London, Ontario. She started to play guitar when she was only ten and grew up listening to her father's music collection. His collection included artists such as the Kingston Trio and Pete Seeger.
Colvin stepped into the professional world with her first official paid gig just after she started college at Southern Illinois University. Soon, she put a band together that featured Dennis Conroy, Brian Sandstrom on bass, and Jack O'Boyle on guitar.
In 1980, Colvin relocated to New York City to join the Buddy Miller Band. She later became involved in the Fast Folk, which was the cooperative of Greenwich Village. Colvin also participated in off-Broadway shows such as Pump Boys and Dinettes, and in 1987, she was featured in Fast Folk magazine. She was hired by producer Steve Addabbo to sing backup vocals on the song "Luka" by Suzanne Vega.
In 1989, Colvin signed a recording contract with Columbia Records and released her debut album entitled Steady On, which won a Grammy Award. Fat City followed it in 1992, Cover Girl (1994), A Few Small Repairs (1996), Holiday Songs and Lullabies (1998), Whole New You (2001), These Four Walls (2006), and many more. She also released three compilation albums and two Live albums.
Colvin, thus far, has won three Grammys in total for the category of Best Contemporary Folk Album, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. She also won ASCAP Pop Music Awards 1999, MVPA Awards 1998, and Americana Music Honors & Awards 2016.
