Shatta Wale Information
Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. (October 17, 1984) is a Ghanaian reggae-dancehall artist. He was born in Accra, Ghana. He is professionally known by his stage name, Shatta Wale. He received his education at Seven Great Princes Academy in the Accra neighborhood of Dansoman, where he showed an interest in the arts and performed in the hit drama series By the Fireside at the National Theatre of Ghana. After finishing primary school, he went on to complete his secondary education at Winneba Secondary School. His favorite DanceHall performer, Yoggy Doggy, inspired him to begin his musical career under a stage name and persona acquired from his idol.
In 2019, he recorded a duet with Beyoncé for her album The Lion King: The Gift titled "Already," which was nominated for a Grammy. At the 2021 International Reggae and World Music Awards, he received two nominations and took home the trophy for "Best Virtual Entertainer of the Year" (IRAWMA). He pioneered the concept of a YouTube concert in Ghana; his Faith Concert became the first of its kind in the country.
On July 8, 2017, Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty gave Shatta Wale the Key to the City. At the 37th Annual Chicago Music Awards (CMA), held on the same night as the 36th International Reggae & World Music Awards, Wale was honored for his work advancing reggae in Ghana (IRAWMA). Wale signed on as an ambassador for Guinness Ghana Breweries and Rush Energy Drink in 2014.
