Ronan Tynan Information
Ronan Tynan (May 14, 1960) is an Irish former Paralympic athlete and tenor singer. He was born in Dublin, Ireland. His identical twin brother Edmond passed away when he was only 11 months old. Due to a back injury sustained in a car accident, he had both legs amputated below the knee when he was 20 years old. Without the amputation, he would not have been able to use prosthetic legs.
After only a few weeks, he used his prosthetic legs to get around his college room. Within a year, Tynan was dominating at the highest levels of track and field competition on a global scale. He competed for Ireland in the 1984 and 1988 Summer Paralympics, winning five medals (four gold, two silver, and one bronze). He achieved 18 victories and 14 world records between 1981 and 1984.
In the following years, Tynan made history by enrolling at Limerick, Ireland's National College of Physical Education, as the institution's first disabled student. After nearly two years in the prosthetics sector, he went to medical school and eventually became an orthopedic sports injury specialist after graduating from Trinity College in 1993. Tynan's father Edmund inspired him to pursue vocal study, and he went on to win several voice competitions and join the Irish Tenors.
