Pierre Bensusan Information
Pierre Bensusan (October 30, 1957) is a French-Algerian acoustic guitarist. He was born in Oran, Algeria. At age seven, he started playing the piano and learning classical music. Four years later, after his father had bought him a steel string acoustic guitar and a classmate had taught him "a few chords," he began teaching himself to play the guitar. He was only seventeen when he signed a record deal for his first album, Près de Paris, which went on to win the Grand Prix du Disque at the Montreux Festival.
Bensusan employs electronics, including delays, distortion, and volume pedals, in addition to the DADGAD tuning scheme. DADGAD's "mystical" and "romantic" aspect, which he claims made him feel transported to the 16th or 17th century, is what first piqued his interest in the tuning, he has said. He incorporates scat-singing into both his composed and improvisational pieces. He has worked with the musician Didier Malherbe extensively. He sang "ELM" for Yoko Kanno on the Cowboy Bebop No Disc soundtrack.
Bensusan's "Falafel a Montsegur" was included on the World Vision Canada benefit album Artists for Charity - Guitarists 4 the Kids, released by Slang Productions in 2006. His debut album was an acoustic guitar piece, Intuite (Favored Nations, 2001). There was a song there that he wrote for Michael Hedges.
