Nobuntu Information
Young ladies from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, have formed a cappella group called Nobuntu. African women's philosophy, Nobuntu, emphasizes modesty, love, purpose, unity, and family. Pure voices, a little percussion, traditional instruments like the Mbira, and certain dance motions make up their repertoire, a mix of traditional music from Zimbabwe with elements of Afro Jazz, Gospel, and Crossover. The 2015 Zimbabwe International Women Awards were held in London, United Kingdom, and the band was up for Best Musician of the Year.
Zambezi Magic on DSTV ranked NARINI, the main track from their second album EKHAYA, as the number one music video in Zimbabwe. For more than four years, NARINI was a top-10. When you think of Nobuntu, you think of a new generation of young women vocalists who are using their talent to preserve their legacy and celebrate their culture's beauty.
The lack of a professional all-female cappella group in Bulawayo and Zimbabwe led to the creation of this production in 2011. The ensemble's goal is to promote the idea that music is the most effective and innovative vehicle for social change, a vehicle through which a new generation of young women singers can express themselves in a way that is universal and breaks down barriers of race, tribe, religion, gender, and socioeconomic status. Through music and dance, the members of Nobuntu honor the unique qualities of being a woman in Africa.
