Ney Matogrosso (August 1, 1941) is a Brazilian singer. He was born in Bela Vista, Mato Grosso. Matogrosso joined the Brazilian Air Force when he was 17 years old and was eventually stationed in Brasilia. A vocal quartet featuring Matogrosso soon formed, and the young singer began performing at college fairs across Brazil. Ney traveled to Rio de Janeiro in 1966 to pursue a career in theater, and while there, he embraced the hippy lifestyle and supported himself by selling arts and crafts.
In 1971, he relocated to Sao Paulo under the alias Ney Matogrosso. He became a member of the glam rock band Secos & Molhados member, who became an overnight sensation and sold over a million records in just 18 months. Ney's success might be attributed to his remarkable counter-tenor voice and charisma onstage. Matogrosso was the band Secos e Molhados' lead vocalist and translator.
Ney had a successful solo career in Brazil and internationally after the dissolution of the band Secos e Molhados, resulting in the awarding of multiple Gold and Platinum records. Ney has always been a divisive figure due to the attention he attracts with his outrageous outfits and make-up, his daring dance moves, and his distinctively high voice. On January 11, 1985, at the very first Rock in Rio Concert, Ney Matogrosso took the stage to kick off the festivities. His "América do Sul" song was a huge smash.
