Natu Camara Information
Natu Camara grew up in Guinea after being born on Ivory Coast. The Ideal Black Girls, a female R&B/hip-hop band, was formed by her and three pals. Guinea mou monèra ("It's not a disgrace to be a woman") was their debut album, which sold millions of copies and was nominated for Best Album 2002 in Guinea.
Their second album, which was recorded in Senegal, was likewise well-received, but it marked the start of a new chapter in Natu's career. Natu flew to New York to spend time with her husband, only to be met with tragedy: he died of cancer not long after she arrived, leaving her alone.
Natu began playing her wedding gift guitar and writing during this period of sadness. In 2013, she took an uncommon bird that arrived at her window as a sign that it was time to start over. She rapidly picked up English, joined a band, and began singing and writing an entirely new style of music. Despite having grown up listening to hip-hop music, she stopped imitating it and began singing songs influenced by famous African and American singers such as Ali Farka Toure, Mory Kanté, Fela Kuti, Baaba Maal, Tina Turner, and Nina Simone.
