Maria Dunn Information
Maria Dunn is a Juno-winning Canadian musician and songwriter. She was born in Scotland. She took up classical piano and sang in various local choirs at a young age. After that, she went to the University of Alberta to major in psychology. She was a regular on CJSR, the University of Arkansas' campus/community radio station, where she played folk music every week from 1987 to 2000. Because of her deep immersion in folk music, she began to feel compelled to create her music.
Joyful Banner Blazing, Gathering (2017), which features a song she wrote ("Malala") inspired by Malala Yousafzai, and For a Song (2002) were all produced by Shannon Johnson of Juno Award-winning band The McDades, and are among her seven albums. She has performed (solo or with an ensemble) in venues, folk clubs, conferences, and festivals in North America, Europe, and beyond.
Her CD Piece by Piece from 2012 tells the tale of immigrant textile workers in western Canada, namely at the GWG mill in Edmonton. These tunes were composed for the multimedia presentation GWG: Piece By Piece, which was created with the help of filmmaker Don Bouzek and historian Catherine C. Cole. The Royal Alberta Museum hosted an early staging of the exhibition in 2009.
