Manic Hispanic Information
Manic Hispanic is a Chicano punk rock band. The current lineup of the group consists of Louie Perez El Tercero, Gilbert "Dreamer" Pichardo, Elvis Cortez, Efrem Schuiz, Maurice "Mo Grease" Torres, Oso, and Ruben "Chino" Rivera. The band's name is a pun on Manic Panic, a famous brand of hair dye in the punk scene, and is consistent with their practice of fusing elements of Latin/Cholo and punk cultures. The band's self-titled debut recording was issued by Doctor Dream Records in 1995.
Covers of tracks by The Buzzcocks, The Damned, X, Black Flag, Wire, and The Clash were included on an album titled The Menudo Incident (a play on Guns N' Roses' The Spaghetti Incident). Covers with new, humorous lyrics that poke fun at the band's Chicano heritage and Chicana/Mexican society as a whole. Spanish, English, and the Chicano "slang," also known as Caló, are all used in the songs. The Damned's "New Rose," renamed "New Rosa," and Eddie and the Subtitles' "American Society," renamed "Mexican Society," are just two examples.
The bilingual hit "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" by Tejano/country artist Freddy Fender from the 1970s is featured in The Menudo Incident as a cover. The bowl of menudo, a typical Mexican tripe specialty, was featured on the cover in a nod to the Guns N' Roses release.
