Mames Babegenush Information
Mames Babegenush is a Danish Klezmer band. To revitalize Denmark's world music and klezmer scene, a group of friends in 2004 formed Mames Babegenush. They first gained popularity in Copenhagen by performing at Jewish events like weddings and bar mitzvahs. They quickly began a trend they called klezmer assault, which entailed playing unexpected performances for random people in places like cafes, parks, and even at private parties.
After only two years together, the band was already making significant contributions to Denmark's burgeoning global music scene. Since then, they have played at venues such as Copenhagen ex VEGA, Global Cph, Copenhagen Jazzhouse, Stengade 30, Pumpehuset, the Royal Danish Theatre (both the Old Stage and the main stage of the Opera), and TIVOLI across Denmark, Europe, the United States, and Argentina. In 2007, the band's efforts to get wider exposure in Denmark bore fruit, and they began playing at larger clubs and festivals.
In 2008, David Krakauer held a workshop in New York City and invited the group to attend. They performed in Carnegie Hall for the David Krakauer Young Artists Concert as a part of the workshop. Later that year, the band was invited to play at the New York Gypsy Festival. During their 16-day stay in the city, they played 15 concerts and were featured as the resident band at the famed Mehanata Bulgarian Bar.
