La Misa Negra Information
La Misa Negra is an Oakland, California-based seven-piece band recognized for their unique blend of heavyweight cumbia and high-energy Afro-Latin music. They give an exhilarating performance on stage, fuelled by the horn and accordion-driven riffs, a furious rhythm section, and a vintage-inspired sound that explodes with addictive dance grooves and punk rock energy.
They were founded by Marco Polo Santiago (composer, guitarist, and accordion player). The current lineup of the band consists of Diana Trujillo (lead vocals), Elena de Troya (percussion), Craig Bravo (drums & percussion), Justin Chin (tenor & baritone sax), Morgan Nilsen (tenor sax & clarinet), and Paul Martin Sounder (upright bass & percussion).
Various musical inspirations influence the odd band's sound and identity as different as their cultural backgrounds. Still, Marco Polo's love of hip-hop and heavy metal is evident in the band's name, on-stage antics, and popular t-shirt designs.
Since their live debut in 2011, La Misa Negra has toured the country with artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz, Thievery Corporation, SZA, Mon Laferte, Julieta Venegas, and Ozomatli, sharing stages and festival bills with them. They've earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic live bands from the Bay Area in recent years, attracting a wide fan base that spans musical, cultural, and generational boundaries thanks to their wild and one-of-a-kind shows.
