Kick the Cat is a world-famous fusion quintet with bases in Chicago and Nashville. The band's sound is in the virtuosic tradition of bands like Return to Forever and Weather Report. Still, it also incorporates modern groove elements, electronics, and a good dosage of humor. The final product is a psychedelic medley of kaleidoscopic textures, rhythmic complexity, and harmonic variety that is still approachable.
The group first came together in the late '90s, when its members were in college and began playing each other's difficult original music. Around this time, four artists were entering the Chicago music scene while sharing a home and a creative space to work on their music. Kick The Cat has been active for twenty years. During that time, they have published three full-length albums of original material and played hundreds of shows both as headliners and as openers for national acts like Umphrey's McGee, Vital Information, Oz Noy, Jazz Mandolin Project, John Novello, Stu Hamm, and more.
KTC is regarded as one of the most captivating bands in Chicago's eclectic musical landscape. Despite his contributions to the first two KTC albums as a drummer, Kris Myers departed the band in 2003 to join the rising jam band Umphrey's McGee. The latest album and tour have him back in the band after a brief stint with Tom Hipskind (Hamilton, Brian Culbertson).
