Kenny Endo Information
Kenny Endo (April 2, 1953) is an American taiko master and musician. He was born in Los Angeles, California. Endo started his college career at UC Santa Cruz, where he studied anthropology before transferring to UCLA to study political science with a minor in ethnomusicology. As a college student in 1973, he spent six months researching the Native American reservation in Arizona that had formerly housed the largest Japanese-American internment camp during World War II, Poston War Relocation Center.
The Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble began around 1991 and has now expanded to include three separate ensembles, one each in Japan, Hawaii, and the continental United States. KETE mostly plays kumidaiko, and its performances include works by other composers, works by Endo, and works by group members. The Contemporary Ensemble is Endo's experimental ensemble, known for "performing original works combining taiko with melodic and other instruments such as koto."
Kenny Endo's compositions reflect his interest in music from throughout the world and his training as a taiko musician. Kenny Endo is a master of the taiko drum and has performed extensively as a soloist. Endo hopes to carry on the tradition of musical and cultural experimentation he has established today. His school is a means through which he can share what he has learned with future generations through performance, composition, and instruction.
