Helado Negro Information
Roberto Carlos Lange (born 1980) is better known by his stage name Helado Negro. He is an American musician from Florida who grew up in Lauderhill and Davie. His music is defined as Latin, folk, electronic, and experimental. As a high school student, Helado would stay up late watching "Liquid Television" on MTV. In 1999, Helado enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where he studied Computer Art and Sound Design. Helado began to develop his musical work by purchasing an MPC sampler to create music during his time at SCAD. Helado graduated with a B.F.A. in Computer Art from SCAD 2003.
Awe Owe was the first full-length album in 2009 by Helado Negro. Next year, he released an EP titled Pasajero, and in 2011, he released his second full-length album entitled Canta Lechuza. Helado released his first of a three-part EP entitled Island Universe Story – One in 2012. Some of his other full-length albums include Invisible Life (2013), Double Youth (2014), Private Energy (2016), Private Energy Expanded Edition (2017), This Is How You Smile (2019), and Live at KCRW (2019). Some of his extended plays are Island Universe Story - Two (2013), Three (2014), and Four (2018).
Helado played an NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert in July 2017. The concert was posted on the NPR Music YouTube channel that has 3 million subscribers. The four songs performed by him were "Transmission Listen," "It's My Brown Skin," "Young, Latin and Proud," and "Run Around." He was accompanied by a 5-piece band consisting of drums, synthesizer, two saxophones, while Helado sang and played the guitar.
