Heather McGhee Information
Author and policy advocate Heather Charisse McGhee has appeared on the covers of The New York Times and The Washington Post. She has served as president and is now trustee emeritus of Demos, a progressive think tank in the United States. McGhee is a frequent guest on NBC News shows like Meet the Press, All In with Chris Hayes, and Real Time with Bill Maher, and he also writes for the network. Seventh-grader McGhee became a boarder at The Bement School. completed Milton Academy that year (1997). McGhee graduated from college with a degree in arts. American Studies from Yale University in 2001.
After completing her degree at Yale, she spent some time teaching English in Barcelona before relocating to Hollywood on September 11 to pursue a career in television writing. After a year, she uprooted to the Big Apple to join the think tank Demos, funded by charitable contributions.
During a conversation about debt, McGhee contacted Elizabeth Warren in 2003, and the two ended up speaking with her daughter, Amelia Warren Tyagi. When John Edwards ran for president in 2008, she was his deputy policy director. After leaving Demos in 2007, McGhee returned in 2009 to co-chair a task group with Americans for Financial Reform that contributed to the creation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. In 2014, McGhee was elected as Demos' president.
McGhee released a podcast in July 2022 called "The Sum of Us," which elaborated on her book of the same name. There are ten total episodes to the podcast. McGhee was interviewed by NPR's Ari Shapiro for a few minutes that September of 2022 to talk about the growing problem of student loans.
