Over 30 years ago, in Honolulu, she recorded a duet with international jazz vocalist Chris Blizzard, her first studio experience. Chris's producer hired her because of how well her voice worked with different styles. Mayes honed her recording chops further with live choir projects and demo recordings from local songwriters after relocating to Anchorage, Alaska.
Her very DNA is musical. Mayes gives life to music. She is the stuff of dreams for songwriters, capable of taking notes from the page and turning them into the kind of aural candy that major recording artists can't resist. Mayes has collaborated with and recorded demos and master tracks for a wide variety of artists across gospel, pop, and country music, including Reba McEntire, Wynonna Judd, Emmylou Harris, Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker, Aretha Franklin, Andrae Crouch, Buddy Miller, Solomon Burke, Michael McDonald, Toby Keith, Josh Turner, Mavis Staples, Bill Gaither, and dozens more.
Mayes built a name for herself as a singer after relocating to Nashville in 1991; she was eventually hired to provide background vocals on the Christmas album Handel's Messiah: A Celebration, which Mervyn Warren and Quincy Jones produced. Soon, requests for Gale Mayes' services as a songwriter and producer flooded in, and he became a familiar face in studios all around Music Row and Music City, USA.
