Fanna-Fi-Allah Information
Fana-FI-Allah is a Canadian-American Sufi music group. The current lineup comprises Tahir Faridi Qawwal, Aminah Chishti Qawwal, Laali Qalandar, Salim Chishti, Ali Shan, and Abrar Hussain. The original member of the band, Tahir Faridi Qawwal (previously Geoffrey Lyons), is from Nova Scotia and spent his teenage years in India studying classical Indian music with tabla master Harjeet Seyan Singh. After converting to Islam at seventeen, he studied qawwali in Pakistan with Rahet Fateh Ali Khan, Muazzam Mujahid Ali Khan, Sher Ali Khan, and Pashupatinath Mishra.
Aminah Chishti, named Jessica Ripper, is a native of Ashland, Oregon. She became the first female tabla player initiated into the Qawwali lineage in 2003. Chishti is a student of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the successor of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Ustad Dildar Hussain, who played with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for over 28 years. Fanna-Fi-Allah Sufi Qawwali Ensemble was founded in 2001 by Qawwal and Chishti.
