Emma-Jean Thackray Information
Emme-Jean Thackray (1989) is an English producer, DJ, singer, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist. Thackray was a cornetist for local Yorkshire brass bands. She took lessons with British jazz pianist and composer Keith Tippett while attending the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. After finishing her undergraduate degree, she continued her musical education by earning a master's in orchestral jazz composition from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, studying under Issie Barratt and Errollyn Wallen.
Thackray released her songs through her record label, Movementt, in 2020. Her 2016 EP Walrus and 2018 EP Ley Lines were reissued after the success of her debut EP Rain Dance on the label. After performing on Jools Holland's BBC Two show Later... With Jools Holland in June 2021, Warner Chappell Music signed her shortly after.
Thackray's first album, Yellow, was released in July 2021 under her Movementt record company. That's why "move the body, move the mind, move the soul" is the name of her chosen label. This album topped the UK Jazz Albums Chart and peaked at No. 3 on the UK Independent Albums Chart upon its release in the United Kingdom.
