Drum Tao Information
TAO: The Martial Art of Drumming was founded in 1993 as a Japanese percussion and performance ensemble. Japanese traditional music and dance are showcased by this performance ensemble, which also blends elements of Korean, Maori, and Indonesian styles. Although there are a few traditional tunes, most are contemporary compositions written by the ensemble members.
Operating from their own training facility, Grandioso, in the Kuju Highlands on Kyushu, TAO's performers undergo rigorous training due to the demanding physical nature of their performance style. All performers are required to train as athletes, a testament to their dedication and the high standards set by founder and 'boss' Ikuo Fujitaka. His adjustments to the training program, following the departure of 400 students over the first decade, reflect the intense commitment required. From 2003 to 2008, forty individuals left, further highlighting the rigorous nature of their training.
Some of their performances include the shinobi (Japanese flute), bamboo marimba, gongs, and koto (horizontal harp), while others feature percussion instruments alone or taiko drums. After touring Japan for almost a decade, the group finally appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where they dominated ticket sales for 25 days in a row. From that point on, they embarked on a world tour.
