Craig Taborn (February 20, 1970) is an American composer, keyboardist, organist, and pianist. He performs alone and with bands, and his primary genre is jazz. As a young man, he began studying music and playing the piano and Moog synthesizer after being inspired by the liberation he heard on records of free jazz and modern classical music.
Taborn toured and recorded with jazz saxophonist James Carter while they were both in college. Over time, Taborn established himself as a respected solo pianist and collaborated with a wide range of musicians in both electronic and acoustic settings. He's versatile, and his playing approach changes depending on the instrument and the sounds he's trying to achieve. When improvising, especially for solo piano, he frequently takes what may be called a "modular approach," building larger forms and structures out of smaller ones, such as individual melodic and rhythmic components.
In 2011, Taborn was named a rising star in the piano and organ categories by Down Beat magazine and won the electric keyboard category. Taborn was named the emerging star of the electric piano by Down Beat writers in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he took home the top prizes for electric keyboard and was recognized as an emerging star in the piano and organ categories. In 2020, Taborn had already contributed to almost 100 albums as a sideman, in addition to his 14 albums as a leader or co-leader.
