Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band Information
Chopteeth is based in Washington, D.C., as an afro-funk big-band that was founded in 2004. The band was created by Robert Fox (bass), Jon Hoffschneider (keyboards), Michael Shereikis (guitar & lead vocals), and Mark Corrales (percussion). The music of the band is defined as Afrofunk, Afrobeat, Funk, Highlife, and Afropop. Apart from the founding members, the current lineup of Chopteeth consists of Victor Crisen on guitar, Brian Simms on keyboards, Jason Walker on drums and percussion, Atta Addo on drums, Cheryl Terwilliger on trumpet, and Justine Miller on trumpet and vocals to name a few.
The name "Chopteeth" is taken from the song by Fela Kuti entitled "J'ehin J'ehin." The title refers to someone who eats his teeth or a crazy person. Although the band is rooted in Fela Kuti's Nigerian afrobeat, its music is a mixture of Ghanaian highlife, 1970's West African funk, Ewe dance drum rhythms, Senegalese rumba, Jamaican ska, Mande griot music, Kenyan Taita Afropop, soul-funk, and much more.
The vocalists of Chopteeth sing in eight different languages, including Swahili, Wolof, Mande, Twi, Taita, English, Nigerian Pidgin, and French. The band has earned many Washington Area Music Awards that are presented by the Washington Area Music Association. Some of them include 2007 Best World Music Group, 2008 Best World Music Recording, 2008 Artist of the Year, 2009 Artist of the Year, 2010 World Music Group, and 2010 World Music Recording.
